Why this exists

Feeling good is not the same as knowing good.

A Returning to Good assessment re-scores 10 quality statements and carries the other 24 forward. The 10 are the same every time, so there is no need to guess what will be looked at.

In the published reports, below-Good scores keep landing in the same four places. None of them are about the quality of care or kindness. They are about the paper trail:

  • Safe & effective staffing
  • Safe environments
  • Governance, management & sustainability
  • Infection prevention & control

And a single statement scoring 1 caps that whole key question at Requires Improvement. The work is usually being done. The proof often isn't there.

Built on evidence, not opinion

Published Returning to Good reports, read paragraph by paragraph.

Each lesson shows you what inspectors actually wrote about that piece of evidence: the gaps that cost a score, and what the strongest practices did. 46 lessons quote real findings from 55 different reports.

How every lesson works

5 to 20 minutes each, done by the person who owns the evidence.

Course slide for Item 6, clinical supervision, with the detail blurred
1

Read

Why it matters, and what good looks like. A few minutes.

2

Find it

Start a timer and find the document in your own systems.

3

Check and rate

Work through the checks. Rate it Green, Amber or Red.

4

Log it

Two minutes in the workbook. Ambers and Reds go straight to your action list.

The 10-minute rule. If you can't find it within 10 minutes, stop and mark it Red. Not being able to find it is the finding, and it's exactly what an inspector would discover.

Run it as a team

Not everyone does everything.

One lead runs the course and shares the work out. Each audit goes to the person who already owns that evidence, so it gets done properly and quickly.

“Is there anything similar for all of the other areas?”

A London group practice attended the June workshop. Four months on, their team is still working through the evidence, prioritising the top 15 and risk-assessing what they find. This week they wrote back to us.

We are finding we have loads of gaps. The approach we are taking is very much assess what we have and then risk assessing.
We have all found the resource pdf very useful. My team have reported back directly that this has been extremely resourceful.
Practice lead, London group practice
We are quite strictly using the Harmony CQC template as guidance… so not to be overwhelmed and actually make progress.
Inspection Ready is the answer to that question: the same guidance, for every area, not just the first 15.
Best 3 hours in the office ever. I came out feeling so much more confident and in control, with a structured plan moving forwards.
Jenny Richardson, Practice Manager, Cumbria
This was so helpful. I have found out there are areas I need to work on but feel so much more positive. I have a list and want to get cracking.
Workshop attendee, June 2026
Absolutely loved this session. It made me realise our weaknesses as a team, which I can definitely direct and support.

Questions

Who is it for?

English GP practices, especially those rated Good or Outstanding before 2023 who are due a Returning to Good assessment. It's run by one lead (the practice manager, lead partner or governance lead), who allocates individual audits to the team members who own that evidence. Not everyone does everything.

How long does it take?

About 14 hours of work in total, shared across your team rather than per person, in lessons of 5 to 20 minutes. Most teams start with the four statements where below-Good scores cluster, then work through the rest.

Is this the workshop?

No. The live workshop covered the top 15 evidence items in three hours. Inspection Ready covers 63 items in depth, self-paced, with the same workbook approach. The workshop recordings are included as a bonus.

What if our assessment escalates beyond the 10 statements?

Assessments that escalate become full inspections. The Going Further section covers the wider evidence set, including medicines optimisation, safeguarding and data security, so you're not starting from scratch if that happens.

Where do the findings come from?

345 Returning to Good reports published by CQC between 15 April and 13 October 2026. Every finding is paraphrased and cited by CQC Location ID, never by practice name.

Know you're Good. Before the inspector does.
